Password managers let you securely store multiple usernames and passwords, either through your web browser (such as Chrome, Edge, or FireFox) or a third-party service like Bitwarden, 1Password, Dashlane, or LastPass. They can be used across different devices and often offer browser extensions for added convenience. Password managers are a flexible and user-friendly option because they work across platforms. Passkeys use public-key cryptography, which is far more secure than traditional passwords. To set up a passkey with a password manager, follow these steps:

Before you begin:

  • Please ensure you are using the latest version of your device’s operating system and web browser.
  • Use a password manager that supports passkeys.
  • Install the corresponding browser extension.
  • Ensure you’re using an updated browser and that the password manager is logged in and unlocked.

Step 1: Select your MFA option

  • After signing in to your myHawaii account from the myHawaii login page, you may be prompted to register for multi-factor authentication (MFA). If so, please follow the steps below.
  • On the MFA registration screen, select Passkey from the available options.
  • Select Next to continue.

Step 2: Register your passkey

  • When prompted to choose where to save this passkey (e.g., Windows Hello, security key, or a password manager), choose to store the passkey in your password manager.
  • Your password manager extension should automatically appear as an option or show a pop-up prompt.
  • Look for an option similar to “Add a Passkey” or “Add New” or save your new passkey to an existing login profile within your password manager.
  • If authentication is required, enter your master password or use biometric verification to approve the creation.
  • Once authenticated, the passkey will be created and securely stored in your password manager.
  • You should see a confirmation that the passkey has been saved and can now use it to sign in next time without a password.

Step 3: Complete your MFA setup

  • New users will be redirected to their eHawaii.gov profile to complete account setup.
  • You can now use your registered passkey as part of your MFA sign-in process.
  • For added security, you can set up a secondary MFA method in your myHawaii profile.
